Building roads and bridges

Can you just build them going across the map, because I logged on today to find one cutting across the area I'm in, it's about 50 blocks away from my house but it runs much closer to others. I wouldn't mind except it's a one block wide cobblestone walkway that's 10-15 blocks above the ground so it's pretty damn ugly.
