July 31st, Apollo 15 astronauts David Scott and James Irwin become the first to ride in a lunar rover, a day after landing on the Moon.
Aug 15th - Pres. Richard Nixon announces that the U.S. will no longer convert dollars to gold at a fixed value, effectively ending the Bretton Woods system. He also imposes a 90-day freeze on wages, prices and rents.
Oct 1st - Walt Disney World opens in Orlando, Florida.
Oct 30th - ShadyVale is turned loose on the world.
Nov 15th - Intel releases the world's first microprocessor, the Intel 4004.
? - Ray Tomlinson sends the first ARPANET e-mail between host computers.

June 24th - Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev addresses the American people on television, the first to do so.
Aug 11th - DJ Kool Herc originates the hip hop music genre in New York City.
Oct 20th - Pres. Richard Nixon orders Atty Gen. Elliot Richardson to dismiss Watergate Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox. Richardson refuses and resigns, along with Dpty Atty Gen. William Ruckelshaus. Solicitor General Robert Bork, third in line at the D.O.J., then fires Cox. The event raises calls for Nixon's impeachment.
Nov 21st - Pres. Richard Nixon's atty, J. Fred Buzhardt, reveals the existence of an 18 & 1/2 minute gap in one of the White House tape recordings related to Watergate.

Jan - Altair 8800 is released, sparking the microcomputer revolution.
Feb 23rd - In response to the energy crisis, daylight saving time commences nearly 2 months early in the U.S.
Apr 4th - Bill Gates and Paul Allen found Microsoft in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
June 20th - Jaws is released and becomes an instant hit, sets the standard for Hollywood blockbusters for years to come.
July 17th - A manned Apollo spacecraft and a manned Soyuz spacecraft docks in orbit, marking the first such link-up between spacecraft from the 2 nations.
Aug 5th - U.S. Pres. Ford posthumously restores the U.S. citizenship of Gen. Robert E. Lee, military leader of the Confederate States of America.
Sep 30th - The Hughes Helicopters (later McDonnell-Douglas, now Boeing IDS) AH-64 Apache makes its first flight.
Oct 11th - NBC airs the first episode of SNL (George Carlin is the first host; Billy Preston and Janis Ian the first musical guests).

Also Shady, you missed the opportunity to mention Smokey and the Bandit released on May 19, 1977. Would have been good timing considering Burt Reynolds' recent passing :[
