Demote inactive veterans?

by zerg960 » Sat Feb 15, 2014 10:09 pm

I'm thinking about demoting the inactive veterans...

Thoughts on how long would be considered 'inactive' or thoughts on it in general? Current veterans will have their opinion considered more valuable.

Gone for 6 months or so? Maybe longer. Maybe even a full year. I think it's a good idea, but some people might get mad about it.

Truth be told, I'm not against this. Not speaking for every veteran, but there seem to be a few who play up to the point of veteran and then leave. However there are other veterans who actually play to help out and remain after getting their rank.

The matter of inactivity is difficult. Some veterans like taking breaks so they don't get burned out on the community. Other veterans seem to leave for good or have a very inconsistent time pattern in which they get on. My question on the whole matter is would the set time affect those veterans who have a difficult time pattern and want to give back?

Honestly I don't think inactivity shouldn't be anywhere under a month. However I think that six months to a year is a bit too lenient. My suggestion would be two to three months with a minimum amount of time to prevent players from coming on for five minutes then leaving to make themselves "active".

I agree about demoting inactive veterans. They were made veterans in the first place to be a model for new players and to contribute to the community. If they are not inactive for a viable reason maybe family problems or vacation they should get time off. Someone who is inactive for a while because they are bored of the game should have the possibility of losing the privilege of the status. I think this would encourage veterans to remain active and give back.
Now for the time period of inactivity, I happen to think a month may be a little short. Two to three months would make sense to me.

Edit* I am kind of a fan of the retirement rank. I think it would ruffle less feathers.

I agree with pretty much everyone above. Should be a set time that players have to be active in before they're demoted. That way, those burnt out can plan how long their break should be accordingly, rather than leave indefinitely and decide not to return.

I couldnt agree more.. (Except for the time period..)

I would say maybe.. 6 months+ because thats when we would REALLY know they're gone.

Suggestion: If they come back to the server, be active for a while, and start voting again, they should be promoted to veteran again.

I actually disagree with this entirely. Once someone reaches the rank, they should keep it. Everyone knows that the definition of veteran is someone with a lot of experience in something. Being inactive doesn't negate the experience that one already has. Why should someone have to top up their experience to still be considered to have a lot of experience?

Also, is there a pressing issue about how many veterans there are - is there a reason for the demotions?

I'm thinking every vtn should be demoted apart from maybe ex mods. here's why, right now the voting system is broken, people are using alts to vote, and with some people having massive lists of accounts, we're talking like 100+ it's very easy for one person to make themselves/someone they like a vtn once they get on the votes. People have been using this legitimately gain the vtn rank in the past and probably still will. Not only this but people have gotten vtn by bribes or being nice to people and once they have the rank they just stop.

Some things need to change before people get de-ranked like:
~votes from only one account per IP.
~no two accounts may have the same email.

if problems persist maybe make votes RSD+ I mean lets face it, RSD is a easy rank to get and I don't think you could really get a good opinion of a player, like are they vtn worthy or not when you have >30 hours

So now the votes are fixed, what now? Well, speaking as a vtn all vtns should be de-ranked firstly to make it fair, and also to be honest if you can't get the rank back like you're in-active, not nice to other players, not able to use your alts to get your rank back, not trusted anymore... Then maybe you should not have the rank.
Lastly, I think the rank is no longer what it should be: Someone who is nice to all other players, trustworthy, will help someone at the drop of a hat and has the knowledge to help them, and has been active on the server for a long time.
De-ranking all vtns should mean that only the players who do all this can get the rank back.

Last thing though, some moderators use the rank as sorta a retirement thing, if they have been trustworthy enough to be a mod and have proven themselves, I think they should stay VTN

it'll suck for us vtns at first be it'll be worth it once the respect of the rank in no-longer being brought down by bad players.

My feels go out to Korpi, Silent and Snow who have only been recently voted in XD but if you have already had the rank it should be easier to get it back.

Eh...

Its not just VTN that needs a rejiggle...

For an effective rejiggle, the entire ranks system needs clarification.

The current hasn't been updated since 8th December 2011, and even the information on it is somewhat incorrect.

But lets start at the veteran requirement..

Veteran: You have played long enough to earn the respect and trust of Kreatious players. Veterans are active community members, meaning: Go on Teamspeak, post on the forums, play in game, and help other players.

Lets look at this:
-Long Enough: This suggests some form of hours ingame time,
-Earn Respect and trust of Kreatious players: You are approved by the majority of the player base,
-Active: They are somewhat constantly on, and the current player base knows them and who they are,
-Help Other Players: They are willing to help people, whether it be a new default who has no idea what they're doing, stopping a spammer when no mods are online, and assisting staff in decisions.

What is a veteran now? A winner of a popularity contest. Yes, its the harsh truth, but as it stands at the moment, at least one veteran is picked a month.... Do they deserve it... Sure, some do, but some are less.... VTN like...

Now... The solution to this problem...

For all you VTNs out there who read this... heres a handy link to a _slightly_ out dated VTN discussion about 2 years ago... For all you non VTNs... Ill also discuss some of the points raised in this thread. (And yes, VTN does get an uber secret foums :>)

I would also suggest some small requirements for veterancy:

1. 400+ hours

2. 6+ months of playing. The fact that some people can get in the votes with 3 months played is dumb. I had to wait a year...

This...

When coupled with my idea of a total rejiggle of the ranks, this makes sense... However reduce the hours played to something reasonable to 300+ IMO, but the point stands... There needs to be some hourly achievement to VTN...

Now, onto some rules about the votes:

1. No giveaways are to be done by people already in the vote.

Side note: This should also encompass bribery, and paying for votes.

This needs to be enforced. End of. It cheapens the rank, and TBH anyone who partakes in this should be threatened with a lengthy ban, and long term exclusion of VTN rank. People who try and do this should be shamed and should re evaluate their morals. Tough I know... But wrong. How do we enforce this? I dunno... Give a tipper a diamond or W/E. Just stop this...

Fed up of reading? Heres a nice picture of an old poll on the VTN forums

Image

Take what you want from this... A large number of people wanted change... And yet the old system remained... Apart from a bimonthly vote...

Now... What we going to do about this?

Like I said at the beginning, changing the VTN rank will require a complete rejiggle to the rank system... Here are just my preliminary ideas.

Default: Keep this the same. Basic commands... Can build, has green text in first few hours.

Resident (RSD): Mostly keep as same. 30 hours base and forum account. For every ban, a certain more number of hours is required... IE. 2 day ban = only another 10 hours, Week ban = Another 30 hours. This remains as an automated system

Resident+ (RSD+): A new rank... Similar to the current CTZ rank... Requires activity and hours (however many hours they needed for RSD + 150), with similar sanctions as getting RSD (Ban = more hours depending on length of ban). This would be also an automated system, however you can also lose this rank if deemed t have done a serious offence. This rank acknowledges you as a long time players, and hence the server would put some trust in you. Most current CTZ's would expect to be moved to this rank, along with most of the current VTN's.

Citizens (CTZ): Similar to the current VTN rank. Other CTZ's, VTN's and staff pick who will be put into the vote, and RSD+ pick people who will get the votes... You can expect this to be heavily moderated, and any accusations of bribery should be taken seriously. Vote for this will occur every month, similar to the old system. A CTZ would be expected to give advice to people, and be a role model for the server, and generally be active. A CTZ who is inactive for long periods of time without reasonable notice would expect to be demoted to RSD+.

Veteran (VTN): This rank would be reserved for only the best. They are decided by staff and other VTNs who would get this rank, and there would be a limit to how many VTNs there can be, excluding ex-mods... Those people deserve it. VTN rank should be discussed every 2 months, and people can easily be demoted as promoted. Such roles a VTN would be able to do is set up events for the server, and be very community focused, doing things that people such as mods do not have time to do. For example, a VTN would be able to run PvP tournaments, build contests and other server wide events, along with assisting CTZ's in helping, and staff in decisions. Ex-mods however can follow their own rules, and as long as they don't TNT the server, will reatain this rank

Cmod+: Do whatever you crazy guys do.. Thats not my area to talk about.

Right... Thats a nice long lengthy post with some random ideas thrown in. Criticism is will be accepted, along with improvements people can think of.
