The issues i'm having with Permanant bans

by mattchuu » Sun Dec 18, 2011 8:50 am

Before asking, no this will not be a poll. I'm posting this with the intent to ACTUALLY discuss this topic.

Originally when the server split Zerg brought up the idea of not permanently banning people. At first I thought "oh this can't end well" but he explained it pretty well. Our grief protection was thought to be unstoppable and thus if a griefer came back the next day it wouldn't matter because he couldn't break anything anyways. Permanantly bannes created the possibility of driving out potential donors or mods that simply made a mistake. He persuaded me, it was logical and profitable, nothing wrong with that, everybody wins.

My stance on it now is becoming more and more shaky. Almost any veteran I talk to has said that there is a lot of grief on the creative and a good amount of the roads on survival as well. I decided to record my 2nd video of the creative server on Italia's pixel beach. I kid you not the first thing I went to I had to stop recording because it was griefed so hard. I had to stop recording about 4 times to skip over these areas. Not only that, but also my Christmas tree and the presents to people under it are being griefed and stolen. Someone took an ornament. AN ORNAMENT! Are people so desperate to grief they have to grief an ornament?! It frustrates me greatly, mostly because I built it. Anybody been to Creative's nether recently? I don't even want to go in there anymore it's so messed up!

My problem now is that I hear of people who have been banned 5 or 6 times and still come back to grief. Of course this would be fine back then but now…now people have been able to grief. So at this time I’m thinking that permanent bans should become a punishment again. I don’t want them, but honestly if they have been banned that many times does anyone honestly believe they’re going to turn the other cheek and become a good productive person? I can’t name one so far who has.

I want other input on this. Am I full of poop? Am I being told wrong? Is there no problem? What’s up, I love this server so much it’s beginning to really frustrate me seeing it get punched in the face.

@Zerg, you’re a great coder, lazy, but a great guy and I have ample amount of respect for you, this thread I hope to god does not insult you but I really want to get my feelings across on this issue.

Yeh i agree, because a guy i know griefed more than 14 times! AND HE DIDNT GET PERMA till his 17th time
So i think permas should come at there 4th or 5th time.

I think that there should be something like '3 strikes your out' where they get permanently banned if they have 3 bans or more. or maybe we could change that to at most 5 bans.

I agree with this. I have seen people grief over and over again.
And when questioned why, they always answer:

- my little brother did it
- just to see if i could
- its fun
- i was bored
- revenge

I honestly think that these people do not turn for the better.
However i do not think that a number of like 3 bans is automatically a perm ban.
We have to considder what they did. Did they break a couple blocks? or did they blow up an entire house/village?
Maybe set in a minimum amount of 3 and then rely on the mods to figure out if the offences are serious enough.

I agree with what Tomvanberkel said, leave it for the mods to see if they did something of big destruction or just a small thing...

ya, sorry i meant to mention that. It can depend on the situation. If you had like 4-5 auto banns throughout a 5 month period, it'd be not as bad as someone who was banned 5 times in a week.

Yeah, isnt the system like 3 warns then an hour ban if its not major, and if its major you get questioned and most likely banned if you cant explain yourself. Im not mod but thats kinda roughly how i would do it.

Lol. I wasn't supposed to be perm banning people?

Oh well, it's necessary with certain people in certain situations - And if I am involved in those situations, they will get a perm ban. Always have, always will.

Don't get me wrong.. I don't just go around handing them out, but if someone deserves one, they'll get it.
